Stages of Olympic Swimming Pool Construction

Olympic swimming pools are specially designed facilities that cater to athletes' top-level performances in major global sporting events, notably prestigious competitions like the Olympic Games. The construction of such pools demands high standards of engineering and meticulous planning. At Integral Spor, we bring our expertise and experience in building Olympic swimming pools to all our projects, considering the differences and technical specifications between full Olympic and semi-Olympic pools.

Differences Between Olympic and Semi-Olympic Pools

Full Olympic swimming pools are required for all major international competitions, measuring 50 meters in length and 25 meters in width. Semi-Olympic pools, on the other hand, are 25 meters long and 12.5 meters wide, typically used for local competitions and training. Both types of pools feature circulation, filtration, and heating systems, though the systems in full Olympic pools are usually more sophisticated due to the scale and requirements of the events hosted.

1. Planning and Design Process

The construction of an Olympic swimming pool begins with an extensive planning and design phase. This includes determining the pool’s dimensions, depth, water circulation, landscaping, and spectator areas. Compliance with standards set by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) is also a critical part of this stage. Full Olympic pools are designed to be 50 meters long and 25 meters wide with a minimum depth of 2 meters, whereas semi-Olympic pools are smaller and more suited to training and local competitions.

2. Ground Preparation and Foundation Laying

Following planning, the preparation of the site where the pool will be built is crucial. This includes soil analysis and stabilization efforts. The foundation, which supports the entire load of the pool, must be robust and durable. Details such as drainage systems and waterproofing are also meticulously planned during this phase. Proper ground preparation is vital as any errors can significantly impact the pool’s longevity and performance.

3. Concrete Pouring and Pool Body Construction

After the foundation is laid, the pool body is constructed using reinforced concrete. The concreting process is critical to ensure the durability of the pool's walls and floor. During this stage, various insulation materials are employed to guarantee the pool’s watertightness. Full Olympic pools feature ten lanes, each 2.5 meters wide, whereas semi-Olympic pools typically have 6 to 8 lanes. Infrastructure for water circulation and heating systems is also installed at this point.

4. Finishing and Interior Arrangements

Once the pool body is complete, the interior finishing begins. Materials such as ceramic tiles, vinyl linings, or special surface coatings are used to make the pool both aesthetically pleasing and functional. The choice of materials must withstand the chemical properties of the water and frequent use. In full Olympic pools, advanced filtration systems are crucial to maintain clear and clean water. The surrounding areas, including walkways, spectator stands, and technical spaces, are also organized during this stage.

5. Testing and Commissioning

The final stage in the construction of an Olympic swimming pool involves testing all systems and commissioning the pool. This includes filling the pool, testing filtration systems, and checking heating and circulation systems. In full Olympic pools, the water temperature is typically maintained between 25-28°C, considered ideal for optimal athlete performance. Similar temperatures are preferred in semi-Olympic pools. Once everything is confirmed to be working perfectly, the pool is ready for use.
